Managing Expiration Risks in a High-Volatility Week: A Short Gamma Playbook

As an options income manager, expiration weeks are rarely passive. They are the tactical battlegrounds where initial assumptions are tested by tail risk, and execution speed dictates your net performance.

Currently, market momentum has pushed several of our high-beta tech underlyings deep into short strikes across the July 13 and July 17 cycles. Rather than treating in-the-money (ITM) moves as trade failures, a professional approach treats them as capital reallocation inflection points.

Below is the trade-by-trade risk management breakdown and the structural adjustments executed to optimize capital efficiency.

๐Ÿšจ Systemic Risk Mitigation: The TSLA Short Gamma Roll

  • Asset: TSLA Covered Call (1 Contract)

  • Equity Cost Basis: $399.31

  • Original Premium Credit: $615.00 (Opened July 9)

  • Tactical Adjustment: Closed 7/13 $400 Call @ $26.00 $\rightarrow$ Opened 7/17 $400 Call @ $653.00

  • Net Premium Delta: +$627.00

Going into Monday morning, the 7/13 short call was under immediate assignment pressure with TSLA trading ITM. However, from a delta and theta perspective, the contract was almost entirely drained of extrinsic value, trading down at just $26.00.

  • The Professional Execution: Waiting for delta-one assignment here is suboptimal if the implied volatility (IV) term structure allows for an aggressive premium reload. We bought back the 7/13 risk for pennies—securing $589.00 of net premium profit (95.8% max profit retention) in a 4-day holding period.

  • Capital Velocity: We immediately captured the elevated front-month IV by rolling out to the 7/17 weekly cycle at the same $400 strike for a $653.00 credit. By dynamically managing the Gamma risk, our total aggregate premium captured on this single covered call structure has expanded to $1,242.00, heavily buffering our cost basis while maintaining equity exposure.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Accepting Maximum Defined Profit: HOOD $90 Call (Expiring 7/17)

  • Asset: HOOD Covered Call (1 Contract)

  • Equity Cost Basis: $83.42

  • Current Underlying Spot: $111.97

  • Unrealized Option Leg PnL: -$1,415.00

Robinhood’s parabolic breakout past the $90 strike has left the short option leg heavily in the red. For retail traders, a -$1,415.00 screen triggers panic rolls. For a professional, it triggers an exit checklist.

  • The Delta Reality: This position has reached a delta of virtually 1.0. At this depth ITM, the option possesses zero extrinsic value or theta decay.

  • The Strategy: Attempting to defensive-roll a contract this deep ITM requires rolling months out into the future or taking on massive downside risk just to claw back minimal premium. The professional move here is to practice capital discipline: allow assignment on Friday, capture the $6.58 per share capital appreciation, pocket the original premium, and instantly liberate that liquidity to deploy into high-yield setups.

๐Ÿงต Structural Delta Defense: RDDT $210 Call (Expiring 7/17)

  • Asset: RDDT Covered Call (1 Contract)

  • Equity Cost Basis: $182.50

  • Original Premium Credit: $3.61 ($361.00 total, Opened June 15)

  • Current Underlying Spot: $195.34

  • Unrealized Option Leg PnL: +$164.00

This trade represents the inverse of our short-duration TSLA play: a duration-driven, wide-margin structure designed to let theta do the heavy lifting over a multi-week horizon.

  • The Metrics: By writing the OTM $210 strike against our $182.50 basis, we engineered a structure with structural upside potential. With the stock currently consolidating at $195.34, the option has decayed precisely as modeled, sitting at +$164.00 in unrealized profit.

  • The Probability Curve: RDDT remains safely below our short strike with days to expiration. The position will be managed to expiration to capture 100% premium decay, retaining the shares for a secondary write cycle next week. In the tail risk event that RDDT breaks past $210 by Friday, assignment triggers a max-profit profile yielding a ~17% total return on capital inside 30 days.

⚡ The Late-Week Plot Twist: NTSK $12.5 Call (Expiring 7/17)

  • Asset: NTSK Covered Call (2 Contracts)

  • Current Underlying Spot: $14.20

  • Unrealized Option Leg PnL: +$318.00 (Extrinsic decay remaining)

NTSK has broken out of its short-term trading range, surging violently up to $14.20 and forcing our $12.50 short strike deep into the money.

  • The Risk Assessment: While the ledger shows an unrealized option profit of +$318.00, the rapid expansion of intrinsic value means this profit will evaporate if we attempt to buy back the contract late in the week.

  • The Game Plan: The current spot price creates a binary decision matrix. If our macro thesis on NTSK is capped, we step aside and let the contracts get assigned at Friday's close to harvest equity profits. If institutional order flow suggests a sustained breakout, we will mirror our TSLA playbook: execute an early buyback to salvage remaining extrinsic value and roll the strike up and out to defend our delta.

๐ŸŸข Institutional Core Holdings: Quiet Theta Burn

While our high-beta underlyings demand active delta management, the macro income engine runs quietly across the remaining book:

  • RDDT 7/31 $195 Call: Exhibiting steady theta decay, sitting at +$131.00 as time value compresses.

  • NTSK 7/17 $15 Calls: Shielded by a comfortable out-of-the-money buffer, pacing cleanly toward a 100% profit realization at +$115.00.

  • KTOS 7/17 $62 Call: Negligible delta risk, currently sitting at +$74.00 with high statistical probability of expiring worthless.

๐Ÿง  Risk Management Takeaways

  1. Isolate Component Risk: Never judge a covered call portfolio strictly by the option ledger. A red option PnL is frequently an indicator of maximum underlying equity appreciation. Focus strictly on total structural return.

  2. Monetize Implied Volatility Crushes: When short contracts drop below 5% of their initial premium value under impending deadlines, buy them back. Capital allocation efficiency beats squeezing out the final nickels of theta every single time.

  3. Accept Assignment Constraints: Trying to indefinitely roll deep ITM positions traps capital in low-velocity, low-yield environments. Take the max profit, take the cash, and find a better entry point.

Weekly Options Outlook: Last Week's Winners + Active Positions With Full Cost Basis Analysis

Last week we tracked four positions heading into the Memorial Day holiday week. All four closed as winners — every single one. This week the landscape is more nuanced: two positions are in the money but sitting on substantial unrealized gains, one flipped OTM after a pullback, and the rest of the portfolio is quietly letting theta do its work. Let's go through everything.

✅ Last Week's Recap: Four for Four

TickerPositionOpenedClosedNet Profit
SLVShort $76.50 Call ×2May 12 @ $4.06May 26 @ $0.06+$799.81
HOODShort $83 CallMay 21 @ $0.45May 26 @ $0.13+$31.90
UNHShort $400 CallMay 18 @ $2.96May 26 @ $0.22+$273.90
INTUShort $300 PutMay 21 @ $6.00May 28 @ $0.70+$529.89

Combined: $1,635.50 — beating the projected $1,548 by $87.

INTU was the standout. Selling into the post-earnings IV spike and closing at 88% of max profit in seven days is exactly the kind of high-conviction entry that makes this strategy work. The SLV roll cycle also delivered cleanly — $800 net premium on a contract that expired $8 below strike.

๐Ÿ”„ What We Rolled Into

Three of the four positions were immediately redeployed:

  • HOOD rolled from the $83 Call (May 29) → $84 Call (June 12) → then further to the $93 Call (June 12) after HOOD surged on its Agentic AI launch
  • UNH rolled from the $400 Call (May 29) → $400 Call (June 5), same strike, one week extended
  • SLV was closed flat — capital redeployed elsewhere

๐Ÿ“‹ Current Open Positions — Staggered by Expiration

Here is every active short position as of Sunday, June 1, 2026, with actual cost basis factored into each assessment.

๐Ÿ“… Expiring June 5

1. NVTS — Covered Call, Short $29.50

Average cost basis$28.91
Current price~$26.00
Strike$29.50
Status✅ OTM — $3.50 cushion
Premium collected$134.94 (May 27 @ $1.35)
Days remaining4

NVTS had a dramatic week. It hit an all-time high of $33.82 on May 26, which briefly put the $29.50 Call $2+ in the money. Since then it has pulled back sharply to $26, flipping the position comfortably out of the money with only four trading days left.

With a cost basis of $28.91, even a full assignment scenario at $29.50 would have been profitable — generating $59 in stock gain plus $134.94 in premium for a total of approximately $194. That was never a losing trade; it just required patience.

Today the position is healthier than it was at any point this week. Theta decay is accelerating and assignment risk has essentially evaporated unless NVTS stages another sharp 13%+ rally before Friday.

Assessment: ✅ No action needed. Let theta finish the job. Full $134.94 premium on track to be kept.

2. UNH — Short $400 Call

Current price$379.58
Strike$400.00
Status✅ OTM — $20.42 cushion
Premium collected$194.94 (May 27 @ $1.95)
Days remaining4

UnitedHealth continues to trade range-bound between $375–$385, weighed down by a new Massachusetts Medicaid fraud lawsuit and Berkshire Hathaway's continued exit from the position. The $400 strike is $20 away with only four days remaining. A $20 move in this environment is essentially impossible without a major catalyst.

Assessment: ✅ Expires worthless Friday. $194.94 premium locked in.

๐Ÿ“… Expiring June 12

3. HOOD — Covered Call, Short $93 ๐Ÿšจ

Average cost basis$75.00
Current price$94.30
Strike$93.00
Status๐Ÿ”ด ITM — $1.30 over strike
Premium collected (this leg)$216.94 (May 29 @ $2.17)
Profit if assigned~$2,017 ($1,800 stock gain + $217 premium)
Days remaining11

HOOD surged from $84 to over $94 in a single session on Friday after announcing Agentic AI Trading — allowing customers to connect third-party AI agents directly to their brokerage accounts to trade autonomously. The launch of a Trump Accounts app the same week added to momentum. Robinhood is firing on all cylinders and the stock has gained 28% in the past week.

Let's be clear though: this is not a problem position. With a $75 cost basis, assignment at $93 locks in $18/share in stock appreciation plus the $217 premium — roughly $2,017 total profit on 100 shares. That is an excellent outcome. The question is not "how do I avoid a loss" — it's "do I believe HOOD keeps running past $93, and is it worth paying to stay in?"

Given Robinhood's aggressive product expansion and multiple analyst upgrades (Mizuho raised to $115, Deutsche Bank to $88), the bullish case for rolling higher is real. Rolling to a July $100 or $105 Call would collect meaningful premium while preserving additional upside if the AI narrative continues.

Assessment: ๐Ÿšจ Active decision needed this week — but both paths (roll or assignment) are wins. If bullish on HOOD's AI momentum, roll to July $100+. If satisfied with $2,000 profit, let it be assigned.

4. ONDS — Covered Calls, Short $11.50 ×2 and $12.00 ×1

Average cost basis$10.97
Current price~$13.22
Strikes$11.50 (×2) and $12.00 (×1)
Status๐ŸŸก All three ITM
Premium collected$93.84 total
Profit if all assigned~$303 ($209 stock gain + $94 premium)
Days remaining11

All three ONDS contracts are in the money, but this is a profitable assignment candidate, not a problem position. With a cost basis of $10.97, every share called away is a winner:

  • 200 shares at $11.50 → +$0.53/share = $106 capital gain
  • 100 shares at $12.00 → +$1.03/share = $103 capital gain
  • Total stock gain: $209
  • Plus option premiums: $93.84
  • Total profit if fully assigned: ~$303

The decision here is purely about conviction. If you believe ONDS has further to run beyond $13, rolling up and out to the $14 or $15 strike in July makes sense. If you're comfortable with $303 profit and want to redeploy the capital, assignment is a fine outcome — you can always sell a cash-secured put afterward to re-enter at a lower price.

Assessment: ๐ŸŸก Profitable assignment. Classify as "willing to be called." Roll only if you want to hold the shares long-term. Otherwise, take the $303 and move on.

5. BBAI — Short $4.50 Call

Current price~$4.10
Strike$4.50
Status✅ OTM — $0.40 cushion
Premium collected$23.94
Days remaining11

Small speculative position, minimal management needed.

Assessment: ✅ Monitor loosely. Likely expires worthless.

๐Ÿ“… Expiring June 18

6. RDDT — Covered Call, Short $185

Average cost basis$182.50
Current price$176.00
Strike$185.00
Status✅ OTM — $9.00 cushion
Premium collected$109.94 (May 26 @ $1.10)
Profit if assigned~$360 ($250 stock gain + $110 premium)
Days remaining17

RDDT closed at $176, up nearly 5% on Friday. The stock remains volatile — it dropped 6% when Meta announced the "Forum" app on May 22 before recovering. The $185 Call has a comfortable $9 buffer with 17 days left.

This position is different from HOOD and ASTS in an important way: the call strike is only $2.50 above the cost basis. If RDDT pushes above $185, the potential capital gain is capped at just $250 on the stock portion. For a position sized around a $182 average cost, that's relatively thin upside headroom versus the long-term growth story. Reddit reported 69% revenue growth year-over-year in Q1 and analysts have price targets up to $285.

If RDDT approaches $180–182, that is the trigger to evaluate rolling to a higher strike in July or August to preserve more upside participation.

Assessment: ✅ Safe today, but this is the position most worth rolling aggressively if you are long-term bullish on Reddit. At $176 there's no urgency — but have your roll plan ready above $180.

7. RDDT — Short $152.50 Put

Current price$176.00
Strike$152.50
Status✅ OTM — $23.50 cushion
Premium collected$1,652.91 (May 26 @ $16.53)
Days remaining17

Opened during the Meta Forum scare-induced IV spike — excellent timing. Already captured the majority of this premium. The position is winning and the cushion is strong.

Assessment: ✅ Consider closing at 75–80% profit this week to free up margin. No reason to hold to expiration for the last $300.

8. SMCI — Short $50 Call ×2

Current price~$42.00
Strike$50.00
Status✅ OTM — $8.00 cushion
Premium collected$65.90
Days remaining17

SMCI rallied 9% on May 29 on Dell's blowout results and AI server demand. Still $8 below strike.

Assessment: ✅ Comfortable. Let theta decay.

๐Ÿ“… Expiring June 26

9. RDDT — Short $150 Put

Current price$176.00
Strike$150.00
Status✅ OTM — $26.00 cushion
Premium collected$956.93 (May 27 @ $9.57)
Days remaining25

Paired with the June 18 put. Both are profitable and comfortable. A $26 drop in 25 days would require a severe catalyst.

Assessment: ✅ No action needed. Monitor alongside the June 18 put.

๐Ÿ“… Expiring July 17

10. SMCI — Short $55 Call ×2

Current price~$42.00
Strike$55.00
Status✅ OTM — $13.00 cushion
Premium collected$749.88 (May 29 @ $3.75 each)
Days remaining46

SMCI needs a 31% rally from here to threaten the strike. Strong buffer with excellent premium already banked.

Assessment: ✅ Revisit at 50% profit. Nothing to do today.

๐Ÿ“… Expiring August 21

11. ASTS — Covered Call, Short $110

Average cost basis$79.00
Current price~$111.00
Strike$110.00
Status⚠️ Barely ITM — $1.00 over strike
Premium collected$2,471.89 (May 29 @ $24.72)
Profit if assigned~$5,572 ($3,100 stock gain + $2,472 premium)
Days remaining81

The most dramatic story of the week — and also, with full context, one of the best positions in the portfolio.

ASTS ran from $80 to $133 over the past two weeks on satellite broadband excitement. The $110 Call was opened on May 29 as the stock began pulling back. Then on Friday afternoon, Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket suffered a catastrophic explosion during a static fire test, sending ASTS down 17% in one session to close near $111 — right at the strike.

Here's the key number: cost basis is $79. If every share gets called away at $110, that's $31/share in capital appreciation on 100 shares = $3,100, plus the $2,471.89 in premium, for a total profit of approximately $5,572. That is not a problem position — that is an outstanding return on a $7,900 investment.

The question is whether ASTS eventually runs much higher as BlueBird satellites achieve commercial deployment. Deutsche Bank downgraded to Hold at $106 following the Blue Origin news, and the launch delay risk is real. With 81 days left, there is plenty of time for the situation to clarify. The $24.72 in collected premium provides enormous cushion against any buyback.

Assessment: ⚠️ Check Monday's option price — IV crush from the stock move may have deflated the call value significantly, creating an early buyback opportunity at 30–40% profit. If still bullish on ASTS long-term, roll to a higher strike. If satisfied with a $5,572 total return, sit tight and let it play out.

๐Ÿ“… Expiring September 18 & December 18

12 & 13. ROBN — Short $44 Put (Sep) + Short $27 Put (Dec)

StatusCombined premium
✅ Both deep OTM with $50+ cushion$3,163.82

Long-dated income plays. No action needed for weeks.

14. SMCI — Short $62 Call (Dec 18)

StatusPremium

Set and forget. Theta working slowly but steadily.

๐Ÿง  The Right Way to Think About This Portfolio

With actual cost bases in the picture, the narrative shifts completely. None of the ITM positions represent losing trades.

ONDS ($10.97 basis, $11.50–$12 strikes) — all three calls ITM and assignment delivers $303 profit. A clean, profitable exit. Roll only for conviction reasons, not to avoid a loss.

NVTS ($28.91 basis, $29.50 strike) — now OTM with four days left. Drama over. Keep the premium.

The portfolio as a whole is well-structured: two near-term expirations expiring worthless, three positions where assignment is a profitable and acceptable outcome, and strong long-dated income from SMCI and ROBN quietly compounding in the background.

Next update: Tuesday, June 3, after Monday's open clarifies HOOD, ASTS, and ONDS pricing.

Weekly Options Preview — Positions Expiring May 22, 2026

 Weekly Options Review

Written by me — retireondividends

As we head into the week of May 22, 2026, my options dashboard is lining up for what could be one of the strongest income weeks of the month. All five open contracts — UNH, three RDDT positions, and ASTS — are currently profitable, and each one presents a different type of management decision depending on how price action behaves over the next few days.

This post focuses exclusively on the positions expiring next week, updated with current market prices and my exact cost basis. These are the setups that keep my weekly premium‑selling strategy consistent, controlled, and repeatable.

UNH — $400 Covered Call (Expiring 5/22)

Current Price: $393.85 (regular close) / $375.46 (after‑hours) My Cost Basis: $395.71 Position: 1 Sell Current Profit: +$546.00

UnitedHealth (UNH) continues to be one of the most reliable premium generators in my portfolio. With the stock trading below both my cost basis and the $400 strike, this covered call is positioned perfectly heading into expiration week.

Here’s the setup:

  • UNH is below my cost basis

  • UNH is below the $400 strike

  • The call is comfortably OTM

  • The contract is already up $546

This is exactly what I want from a weekly covered call: predictable decay, low assignment risk, and the ability to sell another call next week.

If UNH stays below $400, I’ll let it expire worthless and reload. If it rallies, I’ll consider:

  • Rolling up and out

  • Buying back early

  • Letting assignment happen only if the chart looks extended

UNH remains a premium machine — slow, steady, and consistent.

RDDT — $147 Cash‑Secured Put (Expiring 5/22)

Current Price: $158.17 Position: 1 Sell Current Profit: +$187.00

Reddit (RDDT) has been volatile, but the $147 put is holding up extremely well. With the stock trading more than $11 above the strike, this contract is safely OTM.

This is a textbook cash‑secured put:

  • Rich premium

  • Strong buffer

  • High IV decay

  • Low assignment risk

If RDDT stays above $147, the put expires worthless and I keep 100% of the premium. If the stock dips, I can still roll down/out for credit because IV remains elevated.

RDDT — $157.50 Cash‑Secured Put (Expiring 5/22)

Current Price: $158.17 Position: 1 Sell Current Profit: +$322.00 Status: ATM / Slightly OTM

This is the most interesting contract of the week. With RDDT trading at $158.17, the stock is hovering just above the $157.50 strike. This put has been flipping between ITM and OTM depending on intraday swings.

Because this contract is so close to the strike, I’m preparing for multiple scenarios:

1. Roll Down & Out (Most Likely Move)

If RDDT weakens, I’ll roll this put to a lower strike and later expiration. This improves break‑even and adds more premium.

2. Take Assignment

If RDDT stabilizes above $157.50, assignment becomes attractive — especially if I want to sell covered calls next.

3. Close Early

If RDDT rallies to $160+, the put will decay quickly and I can lock in profit.

This is the contract I’ll be watching most closely throughout the week.

RDDT — $187.50 Covered Call (Expiring 5/22)

Current Price: $158.17 My Cost Basis: $182.90 Position: 1 Sell Current Profit: +$51.00

With RDDT trading nearly $30 below the strike, this covered call is deep OTM and extremely low‑maintenance.

Here’s the math:

  • My cost basis: $182.90

  • Strike: $187.50

  • Current price: $158.17

This means:

  • Zero assignment risk

  • Full premium capture is likely

  • No threat to my cost basis

  • Shares remain available for next week’s call sale

This is the type of contract that quietly compounds income without requiring any active management.

ASTS — $89 Covered Call (Expiring 5/22)

Current Price: $83.67 (regular close) / $82.65 (after‑hours) My Cost Basis: $79.13 Position: 1 Sell Current Profit: +$181.00

ASTS has been trending upward, but the stock remains below the $89 strike, giving this covered call a comfortable buffer heading into expiration week.

Here’s the setup:

  • Current price: $83.67

  • Strike: $89

  • Cost basis: $79.13

  • Premium collected: strong

  • Assignment risk: moderate but manageable

Because ASTS is a high‑IV name, I’m prepared for volatility. But the after‑hours dip to $82.65 reduces assignment risk even further.

If ASTS rallies:

  • I can buy back early

  • Or roll up/out for more credit

If it stays below $89, I’ll let it expire and sell another call next week.

ASTS$89CCovered Call$83.67$79.13OTM+$181

What I’ll Be Watching This Week

1. RDDT Price Action

Three of my five contracts are tied to RDDT. The $157.50 put is the one that requires the most attention.

2. UNH Stability

If UNH stays below $400, I’ll let it expire and reload.

3. ASTS Momentum

If ASTS pushes toward $89, I may buy back early.

4. Volatility Shifts

Any spike in IV could create rolling opportunities for additional credit.

5. Early Close Opportunities

If any contract hits 90–95% profit, I’ll likely close it early.

Learn more: When to close options early

Final Thoughts

This upcoming expiration week is shaping up to be another strong income week. All five positions are profitable, the strikes are well‑placed, and the mix of tickers gives me flexibility no matter how the market behaves.

Whether these contracts expire worthless, get rolled, or get assigned, the key remains the same:

Consistent, controlled premium selling that compounds over time.

48 Hours to Expiry: My Game Plan for This Week’s Options Madness

We’ve all been there. You open your brokerage app, and the screen is a sea of green and orange. It’s Wednesday, January 14th, and I have a handful of positions expiring this Friday. Some are "set it and forget it," but others? They’re requiring some serious math and a bit of soul-searching.

If you’ve been following my journey, you know I love selling premium. It’s that sweet "Theta decay" that lets me sleep (mostly) soundly while time eats away at the value of the contracts I’ve sold. But this week, things are getting spicy.

The Elephant in the Room: My Confluent (CFLT) Dilemma

Let’s talk about the big one: CFLT. I sold a $23 Call that expires this Friday. Right now, that contract is trading at $7.65.

Here is where the personal math comes in: My average cost for CFLT is $18. Because the stock is trading so high (implied price around $30.65), my "sold" call is deep in the money. If I do nothing and let it expire:

  • The "Loss": I’ll feel like I'm losing out on that extra $7.65 per share of upside.

  • The Reality: I’ll be forced to sell my shares at $23. Since my cost basis is $18, I’m still walking away with a $5/share profit (plus the original premium I collected).

It’s a "task failed successfully" moment. I’m being "forced" to take a profit, even if I’m leaving money on the table. Do I buy it back to keep the shares, or just take the win and move on? I’m leaning toward letting the shares go and high-fiving myself for a successful trade.

The Rest of the Roster

While CFLT is the headliner, the rest of the portfolio is a mix of "easy wins" and "sweaty palms":

  • The "Free Money" Crew: My short calls on SMCI ($53), SOUN ($22), and HOOD ($135) are all trading for $0.01 to $0.04. These are essentially dead in the water. I’m happy to let these expire worthless and keep every cent of that premium.

  • The ROBN & SOFI Puts: These are a bit closer to the pin. My ROBN $56 Put is at $1.05. If Robinhood dips below $56 by Friday, I’m buying 100 shares. Honestly? I don't mind owning the stock at that price, so I’m letting this one ride.

The $950 Lesson: Transparency, Puts, and the Reality of the "Moonshot"

  • The Reddit Moonshot: I have one RDDT $300 Call I bought for pennies. It’s worth $0.03 now. Is Reddit going to $300 in 48 hours? Highly unlikely. But hey, every portfolio needs a little "what if" energy.

There’s a specific kind of silence that happens when you open your portfolio and see a trade you once had high hopes for sitting at a -99.7% loss.

For me, that’s the RDDT $300 Call.

I bought this back in October 2025. At the time, Reddit was the darling of the market, the $300 price targets were flying around from analysts, and I felt like I was catching a rocket ship. I put $950 on the line. Today? It’s worth $3.

It’s a "good loss." Why? Because it’s a reminder that even when you’re right about a company (Reddit has actually performed well), you can still be wrong about the timing and the theta.

My Strategy for Friday

When you're selling options, you have to be okay with the outcomes. For me, Friday is about simplification.

  1. CFLT: I’m likely going to let the shares get called away. A profit is a profit, and I can always sell puts to get back into the position at a lower price later.

  2. Lotto Tickets: I'll let the RDDT call expire. It was a cheap thrill.

  3. The Sells: I'll let the OTM calls expire to clear up my "Positions Held" screen for next week's trades.

Trading isn't just about the charts; it's about managing your own psychology when the clock is ticking.

Rolling Options: UNH & RDDT Short Calls (Sep 23, 2025)

oday I executed a series of short call rolls on UnitedHealth Group (UNH) and Reddit Inc. (RDDT). These adjustments extended expirations, lifted strikes, and most importantly — generated fresh premium income while giving my shares more room to run.

๐Ÿฅ UNH Roll (Defensive Play)

  • Closed: UNH $370C (Feb 20, 2026) @ $28.30

  • Opened: UNH $380C (Apr 17, 2026) @ $29.43

  • Net Credit: +$113

This roll added two months of time, raised the strike from $370 → $380, and collected extra premium. The higher strike means I keep an extra $1,000 upside if shares are called away later.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Takeaway: Defensive and income-focused. A balance of cash now plus higher upside later.

๐Ÿ“ข RDDT Rolls (Aggressive Tech Growth Play)

Roll 1

  • Closed: RDDT $250C (Sep 18, 2026) @ $70.93

  • Opened: RDDT $260C (Jan 15, 2027) @ $74.93

  • Credit: +$400

Roll 2

  • Closed: RDDT $210C (Sep 18, 2026) @ $88.40

  • Opened: RDDT $220C (Jan 15, 2027) @ $91.10

  • Credit: +$270

Roll 3

  • Closed: RDDT $200C (Sep 18, 2026) @ $93.95

  • Opened: RDDT $210C (Jan 15, 2027) @ $95.95

  • Credit: +$200

๐Ÿ“Š Total RDDT Credits: $870

Each roll extended expiration by ~4 months, lifted the strike +$10, and generated immediate cash flow. That means $3,000 in added potential upside if RDDT rallies and contracts get assigned at higher strikes.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Takeaway: Aggressive time extension, strong credit capture, and more strike flexibility.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Net Effect of Today’s Rolls

1. Immediate Cash Flow

  • UNH Credit: $113

  • RDDT Credits: $870

  • Total Premium Collected Today = $983

2. Additional Assignment Upside

  • UNH (strike +$10): +$1,000 potential

  • RDDT (3x strike +$10): +$3,000 potential

  • Total Added Upside = $4,000

⚖️ Final Tally

  • Locked-in profit today: $983 (guaranteed premium)

  • Potential extra profit later: $4,000 (if shares are called away at new strikes)

  • Overall Improvement: $4,983

๐Ÿ”Ž Final Thoughts

These rolls highlight the power of active options management:

  • You lock in cash immediately with net credits.

  • You give your positions more time to play out.

  • You raise strikes, allowing for higher exit profits if assignment comes.

For UNH, this was a defensive adjustment. For RDDT, it was an aggressive premium grab. Together, they boosted income and unlocked nearly $5,000 in combined benefit.

Rolling isn’t just about avoiding assignment — it’s about stacking credits while keeping upside alive.
